Camera Guard helps you make sure your camera or microphone are not being used to monitor you without your knowledge. The app can block access to the devices, and lets you know about any spying attempt.
Note that to try the Camera Guard FREE edition you must navigate to the developer’s website and complete a form to receive a license code required to activate the app.
Block access to your camera without resorting to covering tape
Camera Guard comes with both installer and uninstaller utilities that make both processes as streamlined as possible. Note that to test the demo version you need to provide a working email on the developer’s site and wait for an activation code.
As soon as that is out of the way, interacting with the Camera Guard app proves to be quite intuitive: the utility resides in the status bar, and you get to decide if you want to block the access to the camera or the microphone with a mouse click.
The same area enables you to activate the Deep Detective function and shows a log with the most recent events. Note that you will also receive alerts via the Notification Center whenever there is a status update or an access attempt.
Receive alerts whenever there are any attempts to breach your security
Camera Guard integrates a powerful Deep Detective function that monitors all the processes and identifies the ones that want to access your device, in a manner similar to a firewall. If active, any access to the camera will have to be approved beforehand via the Camera Guard app.
During our tests, we have noticed that the utility blocks camera access only if it has been running previous to the access attempt: if the camera was used before launching Camera Guard, the respective process will run undisturbed.
To bypass this issue, you can add Camera Guard to the list of login items, and make sure the auto protection function is enabled within the Preferences.
Alternative security solution to prevent being monitored by third party entities
To sum up, Camera Guard proposes an unobtrusive solution to protect your camera and microphone against unauthorized access. The utility functions as a firewall and lets you control which processes can get through to the devices.
Camera Guard logs both the status updates and the access attempts and enables you to review the data. At the same time, the tool integrates with the Notification Center and displays alerts that stay visible until the user closes them manually.
